Works in Progress Update: Sketches, and a Surprising Development

For your January works in progress update, I have some unusual news to report. I am actually…ahead of schedule, on revisions for Roc Rider now. Only just, mind you, but still. Precisely how this occurred is still a mystery to me but nevertheless its exciting. I’ve been working on some very stubborn dialogue heavy scenes recently which were in need of a fair bit of rewriting. One chapter got almost reversed in some ways, as dialogue from later had to be moved up to accommodate choices made in an earlier revision.

I’m going to have some choices coming up, mainly what to do with one character that beta readers just didn’t seem to connect with as I had intended. I won’t be cutting him, as he works for the plot, but the carefully planned out parallels I drew between him and another character…well, none of the beta readers noticed them other than the blatantly obvious one that the more subtle parallels spring from. I may be able to leave him mostly as is, or I may need to tweak some things. The question is, if I tweak things, should it be to try and make the parallels more obvious, or to downplay them since the beta read responses indicate they clearly aren’t necessary to the story anyway. I’m thinking the latter is probably more appropriate.

In any event, things on Roc Rider are going well.

Now, as for the choose your path adventure game.

Things are moving slowly with it, but I have made some progress. I’ve been working on sketches of the floor plans for the corruption menagerie. These are rough and nothing is set in stone yet, but they’re giving me a much better idea of what I need to be keeping in mind as far as scale, number of possible encounters per area, and so forth.

For this month’s update on this project I had intended to scan my drawings and allow the sketches to speak for themselves…but they’re giving me some trouble coming out right. Only one of the sketches isn’t a complete blur after scanning for some reason, so this month’s update isn’t much of one. Nevertheless, you can see from my goofy amateur drawing here roughly where I’m going with some of the details for the outside of the menagerie.

Is the giant wall surrounding the building and the tower of death for the Purifiers to spy on people coming in too much? Hmmm…
