Books That Should Be Games: Every Other Day

If you’re both a reader and a gamer, as I am, you’ve undoubtedly had the experience of finishing a novel, setting it down and thinking to yourself, “Dang. Someone should really make a video game out of that.” I think we can all agree that the following books fall under that category.

The Book(s):

Those who read my most recent book review are probably somewhat surprised to see Every Other Day as the subject of this blog, but you’ll see why in the next section. For my full thoughts on the book you can read the review, but here’s a brief rundown:

Kali D’Angelo is a normal teenage girl…every other day. On the opposing day she’s a magically empowered hunter of evil monsters. One day she discovers that a classmate has been marked for death by one of the creatures she hunts and kills, and Kali knows she has only 24 hours to save them. The problem? Its the wrong 24 hours. The book involves a cover-up conspiracy and plenty of monster-fighting.

Why It Should Be A Game:

I actually feel like the story-line of this book lends itself more to a video game medium than it does that of a novel in some ways. Regardless, the story is very visual and cinematic, and the abundance of action makes it a prime candidate for an action adventure game with an urban fantasy setting.

The state-shifting mechanic would be a pretty interesting in-game challenge as well, as for part of the game you’d playing as Kali D’Angelo, wimpy teen, and for the other part you’d be playing as Kali D’Angelo, nigh unstoppable killing machine. During the former portions of the game you’d probably be using a lot of stealth skills, puzzle solving, and survival mechanics. During the latter you’d be doing more beating down on hell hounds and dragons and evil guys in suits with your magical hunter skills.

Visually I see the game as being misleadingly colorful and lacking in the grit that the story and game play itself would have, to help mimic the two aspects of Kali’s personality. Or, better yet, have the game’s visual environment reflect whatever state Kali is currently in, normal or empowered. That would be awesome.

What do you guys think?
